The Montreal Canadiens have hired former Tampa Bay Lightning player, and Hockey Hall of Famer, Martin St. Louis as the 26th head coach in their franchise's history.
St. Louis replaces Dominique Ducharme behind the bench for the NHL-worst Canadiens and will hold the position for the rest of the season. St. Louis had been the Columbus Blue Jackets' Special Team Consultant since Jan. 2019, but this is his first experience in coaching at any professional level.
St. Louis is widely regarded as the greatest player in Tampa Bay Lightning history. In 13 seasons with the Bolts, St. Louis put up 365 goals and 588 assists for 953 points in 972 regular-season games. He achieved 33 goals and 38 assists for 68 points in 63 playoff games, leading the Lightning to the 2004 Stanley Cup. St. Louis became the 81st individual in the NHL's 1000-point club during his time with the New York Rangers.
Overall, St. Louis was a 6x All-Star, a 3x Lady Byng Memorial Trophy winner (2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13), a 2x Art Ross Trophy winner (2003-04, 2012-13), the 2003-04 Lester B. Pearson Award winner, and the 2003-04 Hart Memorial Trophy winner. St. Louis also represented Team Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics, taking home a gold medal. On January 13, 2017, the Lightning retired St. Louis' number 26, the first jersey retirement in franchise history.
