Lightning fall in their first shootout of the 2022-23 season, move to 6-4-1.
Yesterday was the debut of the new reverse retro jerseys for the Lightning. The Lightning were without defenseman Victor Hedman for a second consecutive game, leading Hadyn Fleury to step into the lineup once again.
1st Period
The Lightning started off by playing decently through the first six minutes of the game, but had a goal waved off and took another too many men on the ice call to put themselves on the penalty kill and stifle all momentum. The Hurricanes took this mistake and ran with it, peppering Andrei Vasilevskiy with shots on the power play and eventually scoring right after the power play had expired. Seth Jarvis took the puck from the slot and rifled it home for the 1-0 Carolina lead.
Shots ended 15-8 in that period.
2nd Period
Despite once against being outshot by almost double, it was the Lightning that would come out of the second period with the lead. A struggling power play was given four minutes of 5-on-4, and Mikhail Sergachev had a wide-open lane to shoot at Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen. The puck deflected off of Ross Colton's knee and past Andersen, tying the game and giving Colton his third goal of the season.
Less than four minutes later, the Lightning gained the lead following a rush opportunity. Forward Steven Stamkos crossed the blue line with possession, and forward Nick Paul continued to move his feet towards the net. Stamkos fired a shot from beyond the right circle that deflected off of Paul and in, for Paul's third goal of the season.
After Carolina tied the game on the power play, the Lightning got the lead back on a power play goal of their own. With five forwards out on the ice during a 5-on-3, Nikita Kucherov and Alex Killorn played some catch before Kucherov fired home a wrist shot. For Kucherov, it was his fifth consecutive game with a goal.
3rd Period
The Lightning crawled into a major shell in the third period, getting outshot 14-4 and asking Andrei Vasilevskiy to carry them to the finish line. The game was ultimately tied as the Lightning were on the power play, surrendering the puck at their own blue line and giving Brady Skjei time and space to walk in and beat Vasilevskiy.
OT/Shootout
The Lightning were forced to kill a penalty in OT, holding on by the skin of their teeth to get the game to the shootout. The Hurricanes ended up grabbing the extra point by winning the shootout 2-1.
