The Lightning faced off against the Detroit Red Wings, looking to get off and end their short home stand with another win on Gasparilla Night! Here are a few things we noticed from the Lightning's 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.
Andrei Vasielvskiy
Andrei Vasilevskiy was once again spectacular, especially in the first period. The Red Wings largely controlled play in the first, mustering 15 shots on goal, which Vasilevskiy stopped all of. Without Vasilevskiy, the Lightning could have easily found themselves in a one or two-goal deficit but instead held the lead and gave them a chance to correct their mistakes. Vasilevskiy was also solid throughout the rest of the game, finishing the night with 39 saves on 40 shots. Vasilevskiy has been great for almost a week now and continues to show off why he is one of the most loved Lightning players.
Second Period
The Lightning had a fantastic Second period, scoring four goals in the second frame with three of them coming in just 238 seconds which ties for the 4th fastest the Lightning have scored three goals from the start of a period. The goals came from up and down the depth chart as well with Guentzel, Kucherov, Chaffee, and Raddysh all scoring. A great sign for the Lightning as both the top line and depth scoring came out firing.
All of this came after a first period in which the Lightning were outshot and outworked despite a 1-0 lead. The Second has historically not been a good period for the Lightning either, but whatever was said in the locker room certainly got the team going. This is exactly the type of response you want to see from a team after a shakey period.
Nikita Kucherov
We all know how good Nikita Kucherov is, and his brilliance was once again on display against the Red Wings. Kucherov finished with 1 goal and 2 assists. With those 2 assists, Kucherov picked up the 600th of his career, becoming just the second Lightning player in franchise history to reach that mark behind Victor Hedman.
Kucherov is a magical player to watch on the ice, and his vision is unmatched when he dances through defenders. That vision was on full display in this game during his goal to give the Lightning a 3-0 lead.
Kucherov continues to stay hot and now sits 2nd in the NHL in points with 68 and with the fewest games played.
Next, the Lightning will head on the road to visit the Toronto Maple Leafs to kick off a four game road trip. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM EST on Monday.
