The Lightning took on the Edmonton Oilers last night as they looked to extend their winning streak. Nick Perbix would sit out another game as he continued to deal with a lower-body injury, and Hayden Flurry would step in. Here are a few things we noticed from the loss.
Slow Start
After getting into Edmonton at 3 AM, the Lightning had an uphill battle on the second half of this back-to-back. The tiredness showed early for the Lightning as they were outshot 10-2 early in the period. The Oilers were able to jump out to an early lead and the Lightning now had an even bigger hill to climb after 20 minutes.
Comeback
Things turned around for the Lightning in the second, and they played extremely well. Thye controlled the pace and held the Oilers to limited chances. Meanwhile, the offense started to unfold as the Bolts created great chances and had lots of zone time that lead to goals and eventually tying the game at three.
Unfortrently the Lightning would not be able to replicate this in the final 20 minutes, and their comeback would fall short. However, this period showed the Lightning could still play at a high level offensively and keep up with the Oilers.
Special Teams
The Lightning only got two power-play chances, but both of them did not go well. The Lightning were unable to get many chances. A large part of the problem was their zone entries, as the Bolts could not get clean entries to set up their lethal power play.
The Penalty kill struggled early but settled in late in the game. The Penalty kill has been really good for the Lighting in recent weeks, and it was again tonite. Anytime you can hold guys Like Mcdavid from scoring on the man advantage, it is a success. Unfortunately, the Lightning were in the penalty box, often making things more difficult.
