The Lightning made one lineup change heading into their mini road trip, with defenseman Cal Foote replacing defenseman Haydn Fleury.
1st Period
The Capitals had the early aggressiveness, and this persisted throughout the entire game. Halfway through the period, the Caps opened the scoring. After Nick Perbix was the recipient of a pick play from the Capitals, Lars Eller found Anthony Mantha all alone in front, and he beat Vasilevskiy for the 1-0 goal.
2nd Period
The Lightning were given a golden opportunity early in the period, as Caps forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel launched himself into Cal Foote, earning a match penalty and a five minute major. Foote did not return to the game after sporting a bloody nose on his way way to the locker room. The power play not only did not score, they barely generated any shots on net and zone time. After the whole power play expired, Sonny Milano (serving the penalty for Aube-Kubel) received a breakaway pass out of the box and scored on Vasilevskiy to make it 2-0 Caps.
With less than six minutes remaining, Aliakski Protas scored on a rebound to make it a 3-0 game.
3rd Period
Conor Sheary made it 4-0 on a breakaway almost five minutes into the third period.
Nick Perbix, who has been a revaluation for the Lightning this season, broke the shutout bid and made it a 4-1 game after some good pressure from the Bolts. Perbix's one-timer from the left circle was assisted by Bellemare and Cole.
Sonny Milano got his second goal of the game, and the season, to make it 5-1 with a little over two minutes to go.
Both Erik Cernak and Mikhail Sergachev left the game and did not return after blocking Alexander Ovechkin one-timers in the third period. Their status for Sunday's contest is TBD.
