The Lightning took on the Minnesota Wild in their second game of a back-to-back. Brian Elliott would be back in the pipes after Vasilevskiy came down with an illness. Here are a few things we noticed from each period.
1st Period
Both goaltenders made some big saves early in this game, which was even more impressive for Brian Elliott, who was playing back-to-back games. The Lightning were also not doing Elliott any favors as they just looked to be a step behind the Wild. Luckily for the Bolts, they would leave this period only trailing by one and had a big chance to bounce back in the second.
2nd Period
Things did not go so well in the second. The Lightning continued to play from behind and were being outworked by the Wild. The Bolts then also got into penalty trouble giving the Wild more momentum and eventually a 3-0 lead.
The Lightning did score once on the power play, but the Wild quickly took back the momentum with a goal of their own. While Elliott wasn't to blame for most of the goals, he did have a couple of bad plays that gave the Wild some great scoring chances. At the end of the day, it was a sloppy period for the Lightning, and they trailed 4-1 heading into the third.
3rd Period
The Lightning started to generate a few more chances but were unable to get any pucks into the back of the net. As the game went on, the clock started becoming a more pressing issue, still down three goals. Unfortunately, the Lightning then took a late penalty making their comeback even harder.
This was not the Lightning's night, with Vasy out and on the second half of a back-to-back. The Wild took full advantage and played a great game. The Lightning will look to reset and bounce back in their next game against the Jets.
