One of the questions we get asked the most here on the Bolt Report is, "Do we play worse in our Black Jerseys?" And while it may feel like that sometimes, it's unlikely. it's time to once and for all find out if the Bolts Black Jerseys are indeed bad luck.
The Bolts debuted the Jerseys on February 7th of, 2019. The Jerseys were a new take on the Bolts old-school black look with a grey sleeve that faded to Black, something we had never seen before. In their first appearance, the Lighting would ultimately fall to the Blues 1-0 in overtime, quickly hurting the perception of the new threads.
The Lighting wear their black Jerseys every Saturday home game except in the playoffs. At the end of the 2018-2019 season, the Lightning would hold a record of 6-0-1 in the Black Jerseys, so if anything, they played better in the new uniforms. Maybe they should have worn them in the 2019 Playoffs.
The 2019-2020 season did not get off to the greatest start for the black jerseys as the Bolts suffered multiple losses in a row. However, they did start to turn things around before the season was cut short due to COVID-19. The Lightning would ultimately finish the 2019-2020 season 6-4-1 wearing the black Jerseys bringing their overall record to 12-4-2.
In the 2021 season, which was also shortened due to COVID-19, the Lightning would only wear their Black Jerseys six times, but they would win all but one of those games. So after three seasons with the Black Jerseys on the ice, the Bolts record was now 17-6-1. An impressive record, to say the least.
This season the black jerseys haven't brought as much luck for the Bolts, with their current record sitting at 2-2-2 (as of February 3rd). But remember, they were off to a worse start back in 2019. So after four seasons, the Lightning are 19-8-3. I think it's safe to say the Black Jerseys are not bad luck. You might even argue they play a little better when wearing Black.
